The word “Dhow” refers to a sailing boat with a distinctive triangular-shaped sail called the “lateen.” The dhow is extensively used in the coastal regions of the Gulf Arab countries and also along the coasts of Arabian Sea in India, Pakistan etc. The dhows are well-crafted sailing vessel and come in various designs, shapes and sizes with diverse names. The latest models are even fitted with GPS (Global Positioning System). The dhows are mostly used in the fishing industry, tourism, and to some extent in trading especially for shorter distances. The Al Sambuq with its tapering bow and high rear end is the most common type of dhows. There are plenty of dhow-building yards existing in and around the gulf countries.
